Discussion:
Ricardo Montleban -- Gene's vs. Billy Crystal's
(too old to reply)

I personally prefer Eugene's Ricardo over Billy Crystal's -- Lulu
refers to the "over the top" accent "Jes" rather than "Yes" which is
inaccurate but hilarious, along with the "eyebrow plunge" -- all of
what Eugene did with Ricardo makes me laugh -- down to always being
dressed in the White Suit from FANtasy ISland.

Billy Crystal's Ricardo just pales in my opinion. And I love Billy
Crystal -- I mean, after the Yankees, he loves my Chicago Cubs. How
can I not love him? Anyone else have thoughts?

Isn't the Billy Crystal character called Fernando?
I think it's a satire of Fernando Lamas.

But I could be wrong...

On an old tape from 1986, it's got a Diet Pepsi commercial with Billy
Crystal doing his "Fernando" character, (just the voice, though).

oh, damn, you know your are right. I had a moment of confusion. You
know, I'm going to become a grandmother in March, my memory is not what
it used to be, and what was the topic?

I still like Eugene's Ricardo better than Billy's Fernando. But you
guys are right.

You're not the only one to manifest this confusion. SNL did a sketch
in '78-79 wherein Lamas, Montalban and Cesar Romero had difficulty
remembering which one was which. They ended up leaving it up to their
dates - Jill St. John, Susan St. James and Eva Marie Saint.

Well, Ricardo Montalban found it perplexing that he was working and yet
Fernando Lamas was not, as he mentioned in the "Death of A Salesman" sketch.

I'm a little fuzzy on this, but I recall an snl skit where they were doing
some kind of Mexican game show with Bill Murray as host, and the question
was, who is more macho, Montalban or Lamas. Something along those lines.

"Quien Es Mas Macho?!" - Completely different sketch from the same
season, believe it or not. This may have been a reference to Lorenzo
Lamas rather than Fernando. Can't quite recall.

Yep. What was funniest about this sketch was that it was actually done
in Spanish but was so simplistic you could totally follow the idiotic
premise of the game show without speaking the language. "Quien es mas
macho...Montalban o Lamas?" Bill Murray repeats over and over in that
"life or death" tone of voice that game show hosts use to ask the most
banal nonsense, as the contestants agonize over their choice.

Oh, yeah, I vaguely remember this. Just makes me laugh reading the
premise!

I always chuckled at the way SCTV had its spoofed characters clinging on to
vestiges of past glories, i.e., "Ricardo's" white suit, "Lorne's Green's"
western outfit a la "Night of the Prime Time Stars," and "Jamie Farr's"
dress-wearing from the same skit.
